Gratitude turns what we have into enough
In the Buddhist tradition, desire is the root of all suffering; when we’re dissatisfied with our lives its because we’re attached to the idea that something better is out there that we don’t have. You might look at gratitude as being the antidote to that sense of dissatisfaction - we can be grateful for the important things in our life, the people we love or our health but also the little things like what we eat and our breath. Practicing being thankful works in the same way as our usual mindfulness, training our minds with a guided meditation or stopping every so often during the day to notice what's going on. Its in these moments we can draw happiness from the world in front of us.

If your compassion doesn't include yourself, it's incomplete
This week we’re talking about compassion, being aware of suffering and feeling a desire to alleviate it. Compassion is one of the key practices of mindfulness and its something we find easy when we think of someone we love. But where we can really struggle is feeling compassion towards ourselves; when we’re suffering we sometimes punish ourselves more for not being good enough. Mindfulness is a practice of compassion and that begins with yourself - when you let go of the idea of who you think you need to be and accept yourself as you are it’s an act of compassion that allows you to start to let go of suffering.

Switch off your autopilot, take control
In mindfulness we call the decisions we make ‘watering the seeds’. These everyday choices can contribute to our anger, our happiness, our fear - just in the same way that if you choose to water certain plants in your garden, you’re choosing what your future garden looks like. Being aware of decisions and prioritising your wellbeing as the most important factor makes a huge difference over time.

If you have kids or nieces/nephews you might have seen a baby suddenly become aware of their hand. They look at the palm, they look at the fingers, then they turn it over and realise there’s a back of the hand. And if they tell the fingers to move, it they wiggle! They laugh and laugh until the next experience comes along. That’s what beginners mind is - approaching the world without assumptions, without judgement, without an idea in our heads for how things ought to be - just observing, accepting, feeling gratitude and joy. When we apply beginners mind to our loved ones, our environment and our body we have a deeper appreciation for what we have and can live happier lives.

Happiness - no strings attached
If you think about what you need to be happy, you might think about achieving something in your career, or a relationship, or buying a house. All of these things have one thing in common - attachment. When we think of the things that make us happy or sad, there is always something within that that we’re attached to. For example, when we worry about what people think of us we’re attached to our reputation or attached to relationships. Of course its OK to enjoy possessions, enjoy relationships and doing our jobs well - but we can love someone without worrying that they’ll stop loving us, that they’ll leave us someday.

Social anxiety & getting embarrassed easily
If you suffer from social anxiety then you might stress in advance about meeting up with people, feel anxiety about going out in public, have regular thoughts that you’ve said the wrong thing or worry what people think of you. This anxiety is common and can helped by practicing mindfulness. You can smile to your anxiety, unlock the door, invite them in, sit at the table and listen. Shutting difficult feelings out doesn’t work - accepting your feelings will reduce the impact on your wellbeing.

How to deal with conflict
When someone has hurt you, it can be tempting to say nothing because it’s not worth the quarrel. But bottling up anger isn’t good for your mental health or your peace - anger that lingers in your awareness becomes resentment, resentments leads to suffering for you and for others. Your feelings are important and should be listened to - practicing compassion meditation before the conversation can give you the confidence to express your feelings calmly and provide understanding of the other person’s perspective.

What is mindfulness?
If you're new to mindfulness or already practice, refreshing the fundamentals every so often is worthwhile. Mindfulness is about the here and now - focusing 100% of your attention on whatever you’re doing, being present with whatever you’re experiencing. Trying to be calm or happy doesn’t work - chasing after things which will make us happy doesn’t tend to either. Practicing mindfulness doesn’t switch off difficult emotions but through regular practice it can help us to transform difficult feelings and limit the damage that anxiety, anger and sadness can do to ourselves and others.

Coping with loss / grief - losing the people we love and the end of relationships
We can lose people in different ways, sometimes someone close to us passes away or a relationship can come to an end. In both case we feel a sense of loss and grief - this is natural . Getting over the pain takes time and its normal to go through a process of remembrance before we we let them go. But we may find letting go difficult and our unwillingness to accept loss can cause us a great deal of suffering. Mindful awareness of our of our thoughts and feelings can support us to be in touch with our grief, ultimately transforming it. Meditating on impermanence can also help - like a cloud, we don't have a well defined beginning and ending. We are a continuance of those before and after.

You don't have to clear your mind! Other voices - Katie Sheen and Joseph Hamer
There's lots of misconceptions about mindfulness - some people think it's about clearing your mind, thinking positively or that it takes a lot of practice to see the benefits. In this chat with my friend and yours, Katie Sheen, we put to bed some of the myths that exist about mindfulness. Katie is a fully qualified teacher who has been practicing mindfulness in her own life for over sixteen years, including through cancer treatment in 2015. Deep relaxation 2 - Gratitude body scan
A great way to reduce stress is to focus your awareness on what you can feel in your body - from tingling in your toes to tension in your brow. Scanning internally returns your consciousness to the present moment, letting go of anxieties about the future and regrets from the past. Feeling gratitude for the functions that different parts of our body provide also helps to improve our wellbeing - evidence shows that gratitude is a key trait of happy people.

Mindfulness and how to be a 'real man'
One thing I’ve noticed when practicing mindfulness with other people is that on average the group tends to be around two thirds women, one third men. I think part of the reason why men are less keen on mindfulness and meditation is that awareness / concentration on what you’re feeling. It’s something many of us are brought up to be uncomfortable with.
Things are changing - which is great - but this varies from country to country, from region to region and from family to family. With a culture shift there’s always a backlash against it - and you see on social media people trying to define what a real man is and does. But to me, a real man - or just a kind person - is someone who is prepared to engage with their feelings, to accept their anger, fear and sadness so that they can transform it into peace. And living in peace they become more aware of the suffering of others and try to help them.

Prioritise your mental health - with guided mindfulness meditation
Looking after your wellbeing is the most important thing that you can do to make the world a more peaceful place - when you're stressed you have more difficult interactions with others, they impact others and so on. So how do you prioritise your mental health? Through the choices you make in every moment, and these can be big, life-changing decisions and the little decisions we face in every moment.
For example when considering a new job, we might look at it and say that it’s stressful and long hours, but a good step in our career and will lead to us being happy - at some point. But another option could allow us to enjoy our career and won’t take us away from the things that are good for our mental health like our family, friends and mindful activities. By making our peace the top criteria in our big and little decisions, we can lead more peaceful and happier lives.

How to meditate part 3 - Breathing
Why does mindfulness practice focus so much on the breath? We spend most of our lives breathing, so every moment is an opportunity to return to the present moment, let go of our worries and focus on our inbreath and outbreath. We can do this anywhere / anytime and by regularly returning to our breath we can live calmer, happier lives.

Facing injustice with peace - with guided mindfulness meditation
We see injustice around us every day; discrimination, bullying and exploitation are commonplace. We have a responsibility to use our voice to highlight injustice and reduce the suffering of others. But in shining a light we can speak out of anger - we're often told we should be angry or to "get angry". We should acknowledge our anger, listen and accept it, but acting directly on anger (even when we believe we're right) can escalate hate and violence. Speaking from peace can make our words heard, more powerful and ultimately have more impact in the world.

How to Meditate Part 2: Think Less, Feel More - with guided mindfulness meditation
Most of the time when we're working, gaming or watching TV we're barely aware that our body exists. We're so engrossed in what we're doing we don't notice our lungs absorbing the oxygen we need or our heart pumping blood around the body.
The body is the easiest way to connect yourself to the present moment - if you find meditation difficult or have given up in the past, it's a great way to ease yourself into the practice. By noticing the movement as we breathe in and breathe out, the pressure of contact with the chair/floor and differences in temperature, we can let go of anxieties around the future and regrets from the past. It seems too easy to be true, but the opportunity for peace and calm exists in every moment.

Speaking kindly Part 2: Awareness - with guided mindfulness meditation
We all try our best to speak kindly to the people around us but during stressful periods we can sometimes get a bit snippy (especially if someone is clicking their pen repeatedly). Its OK to have a bad day - but we can limit the impact of our grumpiness by regularly checking in with how we're feeling and taking time to tend to our difficult feelings. Nothing is more important than your peace - and by working on your peace your words will be kinder, making the world a better place.

Letting go of health anxiety and hypochondria - with guided mindfulness meditation
Its normal for us to worry about our health - we're evolved to be vigilant to danger. But when that vigilance spills over into constant worrying we need to be aware and be kind to ourselves. The roots of our anxiety lie can lie in the past but the small things we do every day (like looking up symptoms) can water the seeds of fear and drive our suffering. Accepting impermanence is key to living a calm, happy life - just as we never swim in the same river twice, we are changing all the time.

Watering the seeds of joy and peace - with guided mindfulness meditation
In previous episodes, we've discussed how the roots of our anxiety, anger and sadness can lie in past experiences and how seeing what drives these emotions gives us the insight to let go of our suffering. Just as important though, is to look at the choices we make every day which have a huge influence over how we feel. When we hold onto resentments or consume unhealthy things we water the seeds of anger and fear. However, being aware of our choice, choosing to be kind with our thoughts, our voice and our actions, we can water the seeds of joy and freedom, building a peaceful, happy life for ourselves.

Speaking kindly to the people we love pt 1 - with guided meditation
Sharing a home with the people we love, we can sometimes speak less kindly than we intend in moments of disagreement. When we feel anger, we can choose not to speak, allowing ourselves time to cool off. We can breathe, we can walk and we can spend time attempting to understand the circumstances that lead to the other person's point of view. Meditation is a great way for us to reaffirm our intention to speak kindly to others, to listen and to seek to relieve suffering. Using Thich Nhat Hanh's fourth mindfulness training, we can transform anger and fear into understanding, helping us to live happier, calmer lives.

How to Meditate Part 1 - How do I clear my mind?
The most common question I get asked about mindfulness and meditation is "how do I clear my mind?" or "what do I do if I'm having lots of thoughts?" Some people say they can't meditate because of these thoughts.
This is normal - noone can keep their mind clear for an extended period and the goal of meditation and mindfulness isn't to clear the mind. If there is an "aim", it's simply to be present with whatever you're experiencing in the present moment. Sometimes our mind is busy - we can breathe and observe this, watching the thoughts like clouds passing overhead. With practice and time, the space between thoughts can increase and we can spend more time in the present moment.

How to stop beating yourself up - with guided meditation
We can sometimes be our harshest critic, beating ourselves up for minor errors that other people don't even notice. If this is a common occurrence for you, mindfulness can help to reduce your suffering.
The Buddhist tradition talks about the idea of the 'second arrow' - the first are everyday events or thoughts that cause us pain, while the second is our reaction to it. Often the second arrow can hurt us more than the first; but by being present with our difficult thoughts - even angry, negative thoughts towards ourselves - we can transform our suffering into happiness and learn to be kind to ourselves as we would to a friend in pain.

We all like a lazy start to the day now and then but starting your day grounded in the present moment can set the tone for the rest of the day - stretching, having a ritual around your tea / coffee and mindful eating are great ways to start the day. Focus on your peace; you have more impact on the world than you know - with guided meditation
You may have heard mindfulness / meditation being called selfish - its easy to see how sitting with your eyes closed breathing might seem detached from the needs of others. Everyone procrastinates - you might have tasks for work or school we're dreading and have been putting off. Its important to be aware in the moment when this happens, sit with the thoughts you're having and get to the root of what is driving your avoidance. A lot of the time we can be afraid to fail, in our own eyes and the eyes of others. By sitting with our insecurity, accepting it and becoming comfortable we can overcome our fear of failure and start to do what we've always wanted.

All of us can struggle with our self-esteem, particularly how we look - there are always aspects of ourselves that we wish were different. We can support our wellbeing by becoming more aware of the negative thoughts we have about our own appearance rather than avoiding them; looking deeply into the roots of why we feel this way will free us from our insecurities. Compassion is an essential quality for leaders - guided mindfulness meditation
You may have heard "you have to be tough to lead." Its true that making difficult decisions does require a certain amount of resilience - but compassion is critical for good leaders to understand the consequences of the decisions they make and look after the wellbeing of their people. If you've previously ruled yourself out for not being tough enough to lead you may ask yourself - is it really you that needs to change?
Meditation can be used to reduce stress / anxiety, improve your mood and live a more peaceful, fulfilled life. If you find it helpful, I invite you to share with others and say hello! Is cabin fever leading to friction with your loved ones during lockdown? With guided mindfulness meditation
During lockdown you and your loved ones may be occasionally butting heads. Its important to realise that the roots of this friction can be the stress of the situation rather than the argument itself - so looking after your daily mental health is critical, including sleep, exercise and regular meditation. It can also be helpful to take time for yourself, particularly if conversations have become heated. Allowing a few hours for tempers to cool before discussing can help you to reach a resolution and live together peacefully.
Meditation can be used to reduce stress / anxiety, improve your mood and live a more peaceful, fulfilled life. If you find it helpful, I invite you to share with others and say hello! Letting go of stress from work and school - with guided mindfulness meditation
Work and school can be sources of joy and fulfilment but can also be stressful at times. We may have too much on our plate, put ourselves under too much pressure or have difficult relationships to deal with. We may not feel that we have time to stop, but when feeling overwhelmed this is exactly what we need to do - stop and breathe. By taking a break from 'doing' and practicing 'being' we can reduce our stress and get new perspective on our challenges.

The world is not beyond saving and you can make a difference - with guided mindfulness meditation
The problems of the world can seem insurmountable - climate change, disease and war might make you feel that there's little that we can do. But by seeing the interconnections between what think, do and consume with what happens in the rest the rest of the world we can make more informed choices that together have a huge effect. Mindfulness and being in the present moment can help to build this awareness and create a kinder world for everyone.

Is it more important to be right in an argument or to be kind? - with thoughts / speech / action meditation
Its easy when you're in a heated discussion to get carried away - we can say unkind things in the course of trying to win an argument. But giving someone a piece of our mind (even when we think we're right) can escalate a situation and put us in a worse situation than before we opened our mouths. Instead we can try and understand where the other person is coming from and consider our words carefully, as well as taking a step back and becoming more aware of the thoughts that lead to unkind speech.

A great way to relax before bed is a body scan, where we focus our awareness on each part of our body. Many people fall asleep during the practice and it's helpful if you suffer from insomnia. Could you feel compassion for your enemy? Compassion guided meditation
Could you feel compassion for your enemy? Its not easy of course - we may prefer to feel anger towards those who we believe are unkind to us or others. We may also feel that our anger is helpful and motivates us to act.
Thich Nhat Hanh tells us that to "love our enemy is impossible. The moment we understand our enemy,we feel compassion and he or she is no longer our enemy." As difficult as it seems, attempting to understand our enemies allows us to release our anger - while still being motivated to make the world a better place.
