I remember a day when I was in nature and a group of children were playing. Suddenly, a small snake crawled out from under a rock and moved towards them. While we adults instinctively backed away, one of the children curiously walked towards it and gently pointed at it with a small stick. His gaze was filled not with fear, but with wonder and curiosity. At that moment, I wondered what happened to us that our childish curiosity turned into fear. Is fear not truly inherent in us and do we learn it?

Children are born with a few innate fears: the fear of loud and sudden noises and the fear of falling. These fears are defensive mechanisms for survival and have evolved over time to protect us. But other fears, such as the fear of loneliness, the fear of failure, or the fear of being judged, are not innate. They are acquired fears that permeate our minds throughout life through experiences, teachings, and interactions with our environment. These fears are the chains that enslave our souls and prevent us from living.

Childhood is a time when our minds are like blank slates. We experience the world without preconceptions or judgments. During this period, our brains are highly flexible and are forming new neural pathways. We learn how to walk, talk, and discover the world around us. In this process, our minds are ready to receive any kind of information. The innate fears mentioned above instinctively keep us away from real dangers, but the acquired fears have not yet found their place in our minds.

This is where the roles of family, society, and media become prominent. We get our first acquired fears from our family. A mother who screams in terror at the sight of a small dog transmits fear to her child. A father who brings home disappointment and anxiety after a financial failure plants the seed of fear of failure in the child’s mind. This unconscious transmission of fear is the beginning of the conditioning process of our minds. The beliefs and fears of the parents gradually become our own beliefs.

The media actually teaches us to only protect ourselves instead of living.

These acquired fears, which take root in our minds over time, are like weeds that prevent our growth and flourishing. They gradually distance us from the fearless child we once were. We lose ourselves among all these fears. In the end, we must come to the realization that most of our fears are constructed, not innate.

On this path, by returning to that inner child, we can find courage within ourselves again. We must learn to distinguish acquired fears from innate fears so that we can confront them.

This part of the brain is the fear processing center and is responsible for sending danger signals to the rest of the body. This process initiates a quick and unconscious reaction that we know as the fight or flight response, a reaction that prepares our body to confront danger.

This reaction is essentially necessary for our survival and helps us stay away from real dangers. Useful fears are those that save our lives. The fear of fire, the fear of falling from a height, and the fear of approaching wild animals are examples of these types of fears. They help us make wise decisions and prevent us from getting hurt. These fears are like loyal guardians who make us aware of environmental dangers and allow us to live with caution and awareness. Without these fears, we would constantly be exposed to serious dangers.

But the problem begins when our fear system acts in a way that is not only unhelpful, but paralyzes our lives. Paralysing fears are those that are formed based on past memories or experiences and show an illogical reaction to unreal dangers. The fear of public speaking, the fear of starting a new relationship after an emotional breakup, or the fear of investing again after a financial failure are examples of these fears. These fears prevent our growth and deprive us of new experiences.

Past experiences and memories play a very important role in conditioning our minds. Suppose you once made a mistake during a public speech and were ridiculed. Your brain remembers this painful experience and creates a new neural pathway that associates public speaking with pain and shame. As a result, every time you think about speaking, your amygdala becomes active and creates the same physical reactions of fear in your body. This is the mental conditioning that can turn into a paralysing fear.

In the world of relationships, this process happens in a different way. When you are once emotionally betrayed, your mind registers this experience as a great danger. Therefore, in the future, every time you think about a new emotional relationship, your mind, by recalling that painful memory, prevents you from it. This fear of being rejected or hurt again prevents you from exposing yourself to love and intimacy again. This fear unconsciously keeps you in emotional isolation.

The same scenario applies to financial failures. Suppose you lost all your savings in a major investment. This experience is so painful that your brain registers it as a great threat to your survival. The result is that even with new job or investment opportunities, your mind automatically returns to that memory and, by creating fear and anxiety, prevents you from taking risks. This fear can turn into a vicious cycle that keeps you in a stagnant financial situation.

Our mind, using these memories, draws a roadmap for our lives. This map, although initially designed to protect us, can turn into a prison over time. This map is full of limitations and red lines that we ourselves have drawn based on bitter past experiences. To go beyond these limitations, we must teach our minds that every new experience is not necessarily a repeat of the past.

Freeing ourselves from these paralysing fears begins with the understanding that they are only the conditioned reactions of our minds, not absolute reality. When we become aware of these internal mechanisms, we can take steps to change them. This begins with observing our fears and naming them. When we understand that our fear of public speaking is just a learned reaction and not a reality, we can manage it.

This chapter shows us that our mind is a powerful tool that can be both our friend and our enemy. Which one it is depends on how much awareness we have of it and how we deal with our memories and experiences. This journey is a journey into our minds, a journey to understand how fear is built in it and how we can rebuild it. To do this, we must get out of the victim state and take control of our minds.

Chapter 3:

When Fear Rules Us

You might think that fear is just a momentary feeling that disappears after facing danger, but the truth is that when fear becomes a constant companion, it envelops our entire being and affects our psyche, body, relationships, and even our life path. This constant fear takes deep root in our minds and manifests itself in various forms such as chronic stress and anxiety. Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure, but when fear feeds it, it becomes a permanent state that wears us down from within. Anxiety is a step beyond stress, a constant worry about a future that never happens. These two trap our minds in a never-ending cycle of negative and catastrophic thoughts.

Life is a great adventure that must be experienced with all one’s being, but fear turns us into spectators of our own lives. We are no longer the main actors, we just watch from a distance and wish we had more courage. This life is not our life, it is the life of our fears.
