Never Give Up, Never GiveIn, Never Quit with Dr. Dain Heer
#510: Welcome to the Anxiety Slayer podcast. Today Shann is speaking Dr. Dain Heer on how we can support our youth who are struggling with depression, self-esteem, and an alarming increase in the rate of suicide.
Suicide prevention remains a universal challenge. It is responsible for over 800,000 deaths or one suicide every 40 seconds. In 2019, worrying trends in U.S. suicide rates continued as suicide ranked the 2nd leading cause of death for 10-to 34-year olds.
…From the outside, Dr. Dain had a seemingly perfect life, but what no one knew is that he had set a date to take his own life. Years later, his mission continues to save lives each year by sharing his own story and to bring hope to others battling unworthiness.
We discuss suicide as a result of feeling worthless and “wrong” in the face of societal ideals and pressures.

How to regain calm when anxiety hijacks your brain
#505: Anxiety frequently hijacks our thinking with a fearful narrative. For example: “what if” thoughts or worst-case scenarios. The body responds as if those fearful thoughts are true—because it doesn’t know the difference between a real threat and imagined scenarios. When the body reacts it makes the mind more disturbed and we get caught in this fear cycle that feels frightening and completely takes over our body and mind. Here’s what happens: Anxiety starts with a trigger, a symptom or sensation, a message, or news item - something that strikes a vulnerable place in us. The mind zooms in on it and instantly creates an anxious narrative. A story around the trigger that makes it instantly more solid, or a potential threat. As soon as the mind creates its story, and it can happen in an instant, the body reacts. Our heart beats faster, our breathing becomes shallow, we might feel lightheaded, or shaky. And these sensations in the body feedback into our mind and furthe…

Easing emotional pain and uncertainty with Ayurveda
#501 This week we're talking about how Ayurvedic lifestyle support can help us when we're living with emotional pain or uncertainty.
Points covered in this episode: THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING SELF-UNDERSTANDING
Ayurveda teaches that everything is personal and individual. There isn’t one solution that suits everyone, because we are all made up differently and we respond differently.
So we begin by listening to the dialogue in our mind and watching how our body is responding. There are clues and messages in both our minds and body that we can note and respond.
Right now, most of us are all over the place. And it’s OK. We need to start with self-acceptance, and move into self-care and leave space for others and what they’re going through too.
SELF-CARE SHOULD BE OUR FIRST PRIORITY
We can’t function well, or be help others if we aren’t taking care of ourselves. This isn’t selfish, it’s a necessity, we burn out quickly when we neglect our own care.

Getting through the things we face in life that can feel so overwhelming
#486: This week on the Anxiety Slayer podcast we’re talking about getting through the things we face in life that can feel so overwhelming When the little things feel big and too much to cope with, it’s a nudge that we need to slow down and take better care of ourselves. Overwhelm can be a response to anxiety, change, trauma, exhaustion or depression. And, while we often feel like we should push through, it’s seldom helpful.

For freedom from anxiety, ban these words from your self-talk
#484: This week we’re talking about words to ban from your self-talk to remain free from anxiety.
The words you speak become the house you live in. — Hafiz
Language is the painter of our psychological experiences. If we think and talk hope, we will feel hope. But if our thoughts and dialogue are rooted in anxiety and fear, that is how we feel. We will feel anxious, we will behave anxiously and we will further grow anxiety because we are feeding it at the root.

Points covered in this episode: OVERSTIMULATION
Ayurveda (India’s ancient science of life) teaches that the over-stimulation of the nervous system is the leading underlying cause of anxiety.
Too much incoming information overloads our nervous system. Social media, news, intense movies, noise, change.
Many of us live with constant noise and visual stimulation, even when we’re in bed trying to sleep there may be the rumble of traffic or aircraft or some other noise – these things are agitating to our nervous systems, and our nervous system becomes overwhelmed and overtaxed, and then we start to experience anxiety.
Ayurveda teaches that the mind is very sensitive and easily disturbed.
That is true for all of us; it is the nature of the mind to be disturbed. Accepting that fact and knowing how to help the mind…

Pivot toward what matters and liberate your mind with Steven C. Hayes, PhD
#467: Shann had the pleasure of sharing a conversation with Steven C. Hayes PhD. about how to pivot toward what matters in your life.As we all know, life can sometimes throw us a curveball—or go full throttle and throw us straight towards rock bottom. And, the struggle stems from the problem-solving mind, which tells us to run from what causes us fear and hurt. However, Steven C. Hayes, author of A Liberated Mind encourages us to run towards that fear because what we may not realize is…we hurt where we care.
As a struggler himself, Steven has pioneered a successful approach, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help those with mental health disorders feel fully, think freely, and live lives that reflect the qualities they choose. In his book, he reminds us that life is not a problem to be solved by showing us that we can live full and meaningful lives by embracing our vulnerability and turning towards what hurts.

What does self-care really mean for anxiety sufferers?
Anxiety is a condition that benefits from inner work and support. When we are in pain or things aren’t going well in our lives our natural inclination is to want to fix it.
And our tendency is to point somewhere “out there” at someone, or something external that needs adjusting so we can feel more comfortable.
We see this happen with anxiety when we declare a dislike for it. Sometimes we say “I hate my anxiety” or “I just want it to go away”. Anxiety feels awful, truly terrifying on occasions and we just want it to stop.
The challenge is that it’s happening in our own minds and bodies - it isn’t “out there”, it’s in here! So we have the uncomfortable task ahead of learning to be with ourself when we don’t feel good.
In this week's podcast, we're talking about some starting points for bringing self-care into anxiety recovery.

The importance of Taking Action to Escape Anxiety
When we talk about taking action to get free from anxiety. How many of you have a little voice in your head saying things like: "If only it was that easy?" Or "It won't work for me." Maybe your mind tells you "My anxiety is different." Or that the advice "sounds too hard" or maybe "it sounds too simple."
If you do, you sit among the majority of our listeners. Only a handful of listeners to this show take action against their anxiety. Because that's just how the mind is. It will resist taking action all day long. And then when you go to bed at night that very same mind will start berating you that you did nothing today.
Make 2017 the year you do something to escape the grip of your anxiety.
Don't let that little voice stop you and then get on your case later. Go to bed tonight knowing you did something. You took action and made a start. You became one of the empowered few that will escape the grip of anxiety this year.
